Cast iron pipes have a lifespan. When they go, they don't always give you a lot of warning. This commercial building had a cracked section hiding inside the wall - and once we opened it up, it was clear the pipe had been failing for a while. The crack ran the length of the pipe, and the moisture damage to the surrounding wall told the rest of the story.

Here's what we were working with: a cast iron drain line that had split wide open inside a finished wall. Getting to it meant carefully cutting into the drywall, pulling back the layers, and getting eyes on exactly what needed to come out. That kind of methodical approach matters. You don't want to make a bigger mess than the pipe already made.

Once we had full access, we pulled the damaged cast iron section and replaced it with new pipe. Cast iron is heavy, brittle, and expensive to replace in sections - but that's exactly the kind of broken and rusted pipe repair and replacement work we do. The new pipe goes in clean, fits properly, and actually solves the problem rather than just patching around it.

One repair done - but this building has more cast iron that needs to go. A complete repipe is already planned as the next step. That's actually the smarter way to handle aging cast iron in a commercial property. Fix the immediate failure first, then address the rest of the system on a controlled timeline so the building stays operational throughout the process.

Old plumbing doesn't always announce itself until something breaks. If your building has cast iron drain lines and you've been dealing with slow drains, odors, or unexplained moisture - it's worth getting someone to take a look before a wall has to be opened up under emergency conditions.
